Since 2001, Céu do Montréal has worked diligently with the Canadian Government on the recognition of the Santo Daime as a legitimate religious practice and for the permission to import the Santo Daime sacrament for the ritual use in the spiritual services. In 2006, after five years of research,  Health Canada granted permission in principle, pending export permission from Brazil. In a 2008 Issue Analysis Summary the Office of Controlled Substances recommends the granting of the exemption. Please see our legalization page for the full background.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the freedom of conscience and religion, and therefore Céu do Montréal continues to work towards the right to freedom of religion and the right to import our sacrament into Canada. We continue to be willing to work together with the government to develop fair and reasonable regulations regarding our sacrament and the practice of our religion. We need your help in the form of financial donations and/or volunteering of skills. We have begun a new phase in our legal approach and estimate that we will need $50,000.00 to accomplish  our goals. Who We Are:

• Céu do Montréal is a small independent Santo Daime centre located in Montréal, Québec.
• The Santo Daime is a syncretic religion from the Brazilian Amazon originating during the early 1900′s, which incorporates Indigenous, African, and European spiritual traditions and reverence for nature.
• The Santo Daime’s religious sacrament is a tea called Santo Daime, or Daime, containing the vine Banisteriopsis caapi and leaves of the Psychotria viridis plant. These plants have been used for millennia for wisdom and healing in the Amazon Basin. The vine Banisteriopsis caapi is also known as Ayahuasca.
• Céu do Montréal is a volunteer-based, registered Canadian not-for-profit corporation.
• Santo Daime does not proselytize or actively promote its practices or services, known as Works.
• Céu do Montréal advocates for the protection of the Amazon rainforest and sustainable agricultural practices for the production of the sacramental tea.

Why Fund Our Legalization Campaign:

• We believe that all individuals have the right to a direct experience with the Divine with the aim of awakening conscience and self-improvement, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, socio-economic status, or personal spiritual beliefs.
• We have worked consistently and positively with Health Canada until 2012 and are the first group in Canada to seek an exemption based on legitimate religious grounds.
• The precedence for the ritual use of a plant that contains a controlled substance is already established policy in Canada; the authorized use of Peyote by members of the Native American Church in Canada.
• We are committed to providing an accountable and ethical environment, including access to quality scientific information about the sacramental tea and our works.

• To cover costs associated with our legal representation.
• Cover costs associated with our website.

What Achievement of Our Goal Would Mean:

• Affirmation of the right of all Canadians to practice their religion free from prejudice and discrimination.
• Promotion of ethical norms and standards for the ritual use of Santo Daime in Canada and abroad.
• Promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and protection of the rainforest in the production of the sacramental tea.
